Out of District Students

In the near future, I may be assuming responsibility for students who are currently in out-of-district placements. I am curious about your experience dealing with out-of-district students.

Do you conduct site visits?

How familiar are you with the programs that house your students?

Do you chair the annual reviews or is your PPS director the chair?

I am trying to get a sense of the responsibilities psychologists in other districts have, so I can begin to conceptualize my role. Please advise!

In my district the director or assistant director of special education (PPS) chair the annuals for our out of district students. However, the psychologist goes with them. Usually it is the psychologist for the grade/ school the student is currently in. We don't generally conduct site visits, but we do often go on the screenings for students we are considering placing out of district.

Luckily, my district just hired a district psychologist who is in charge of the overseeing of all our-of-district students. This psychologist does the assessments, review that the services are being provided by the host school, and attends all CSE meeting for the students. This position has been very helpful for us because it means that building school psy no longer have to leave the building (sometimes for the whole day) to observe, screen/ test these students, therefore, freeing up some time to perform other tasks.
